Formatr Academic Citation Guides

What are citation styles?

Citation styles are standardized systems used in academic writing to acknowledge where you got your information from (the sources) and how to present it to the reader. They define how in-text citations appear in your paper and how full references are formatted in the bibliography or reference list. Different disciplines use different styles. APA is common in the social sciences, MLA in the humanities, Harvard across many universities, and IEEE in engineering and technical fields. While the details vary, the goal remains the same: to make your sources clear, consistent, and easy for readers to trace.

Why formatting errors happen ?

Even experienced writers make formatting mistakes. Citation rules include many small details related to punctuation, capitalization, italics, author ordering, and specific layouts dependent on the type of source. When you combine multiple references, revisions, and tight deadlines, it becomes easy for inconsistencies to slip in. A missing comma, an incorrectly formatted journal title, or a citation that doesn’t match the reference list can create problems at submission. Using clear examples and quick checks can help writers catch these issues before their work is reviewed or published. We invite you to check out our growing list of citation guides below.
